In case you missed this BIG NEWS:
MetaQuest 3s VR headset is $499 compared to the MetaQuest 3 which is $799.
The Meta Quest 3S VR headset is a welcome addition to Meta’s lineup, bridging the gap between affordability and performance, and offering a solid upgrade over the Meta Quest 2. While the Quest 2 was a great entry point into virtual reality, it’s starting to show its age in both processing power and visual fidelity.
The MetaQuest 3S VR headset steps up with the newer Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, delivering smoother performance and better graphics. It also includes full-colour passthrough for mixed reality applications—a feature missing from the Quest 2—making it more versatile and future-ready. While the 3S doesn’t quite match the premium optics and slimmer profile of the more expensive Meta Quest 3, it does enough to stand on its own, especially considering its price point.
At PatientVR, our team has been actively testing the Meta Quest 3S as part of our research and development efforts. We’ve found that it offers a reliable, high-quality experience for patients, without compromising on comfort or usability. Based on this, we recommend the following for the VR kit:
- Meta Quest 3S 128GB VR Headset: $499 AUD
- Elite Strap (without the battery): $119 AUD
- Standard Carry Case (not the compact version): $119 AUD
This brings the total to roughly $737 AUD for the headset, the elite strap and the carry case — significantly more affordable than the Meta Quest 3 kit, which previously pushed past $1,200 AUD with similar accessories. For organisations looking to roll out multiple headsets, this setup offers great value, solid performance, and a comfortable experience for end users.
Meta Quest 3S features the same mixed reality experience as Quest 3, with 4.5 times the resolution and colour compared to Quest 2. Quest 3S includes a spacer for your glasses if you need them.
We even found a deal for $449 at JB Hi-Fi, Amazon AU and direct on the Meta website running a short launch campaign which was a $50 less than the full price. Though we expect this to be a short offer campaign. We recommend you do your research before purchase. These prices and links were at the time of publishing this article.
We are phasing out MetaQuest 2 as a recommended device for PatientVR
We no longer recommend the Meta Quest 2 for PatientVR. While it was a breakthrough device for its time, its older hardware struggles to keep up with today’s immersive content and performance demands. The lack of full-colour passthrough limits its mixed reality capabilities, and users may experience slower load times and reduced visual quality compared to newer models. With Meta phasing out long-term support for the Quest 2, the Quest 3S offers a more future-proof and reliable solution for delivering a smooth and engaging patient experience.
