This is rarely a concern for usage of durations of an hour or less, but if concerned the Quest 3 is a more comfortable choice. The Quest 3 is only slightly lighter than the Quest 2 but the weight distribution is improved by using lighter and thinner optical components so the weight is more evenly distributed with a Quest 3.
Frequently asked questions
What VR headsets does PatientVR run on?
PatientVR runs on Meta Quest headset 3. We recommend using an elite strap and a hard top carry case to protect the device.
How can I disinfect the headset?
- Clean your devices (headset, controllers and other elements that have been touched) between each use with non-alcohol, non-abrasive, anti-bacterial wipes. When using these products, wet the surface until it is visibly wet. The surface should remain wet for 10 minutes. Wipe your headset’s facial interface with a clean cloth and water to remove any residual cleaner and let dry completely before using again.
- From Meta’s website: “To clean the facial interface, elastic headstraps, headpads, and silicone covers: wipe off surface debris with a microfiber cloth. For additional cleaning, remove the component(s) from the headset and hand wash with cool water and a mild liquid detergent. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Do not submerge. Allow to air dry fully before reinstalling.”
- You can also buy replacement face covers or eye pads for the Quest headsets, and use them as “single use” disposables if needed.
Can I use PatientVR with my prescription glasses?
The Meta Quest 3 comes with a “glasses space” which can be installed by removing the facial interface foam from the headset, clicking the glasses spacer in its placethe putting the the interface foam back in place over the glasses spacer. You can now use your Meta Quest 3 without having to worry about your glasses coming into contact with the headset’s lenses.
Where is my data stored?
Mostly, we don’t store “your data”. We do not collect your name or contact details or health data (like medicare number). We do collect headset usage analytics – these are stored on Amazon AWS (in the AP Southeast 2 Sydney region).
Can PatientVR be used on a wheelchair?
Yes. Some 360° content will have views to directly behind, which may not be visible just from turning the head. Care should be taken to ensure wheelchair users cannot “roll away” while their vision is covered by the headset is the brakes are released to allow the chair to swivel.
How does PatientVR protect user privacy?
PatientVR never collects any user information. Wee never collect or store any user or patient names or contact details or Medicare numbers.
Is PatientVR a medical device as covered by TGA regulations?
PatientVR is a consumer health and wellness product for prevention, management and follow up. It does not provide information to the consumer that would generally be accepted to require the interpretation of a health professional. It does not process or analyse any medical images or signals from other medical devices. It does not replace the clinical judgement of a health care professional, or make any clinical diagnosis or treatment decisions or suggestions. This places it in the excluded category and as such is not a TGA regulated “medical device”.
What health benefits or specialties does PatientVR target?
PatientVR focusses on pain management via distraction, overall well-being, and feeling connected to the outside World. It is currently used mainly in palliative care, and is being discussed or trialled across specialties such as phobias, paediatric care, and others.
Does PatientVR require an internet connection?
PatientVR does operate in offline mode, but it does require a Wi-Fo internet connection for installation and activation onto the headsets. The full set of “Interact” features work offline, but an internet connection is required to stream 360° video and images from he Cloud Platform.
How fast an internet connection required?
The highest quality 360° VR video can require as much as 20mbps of download bandwidth. Other content can be used with lower bandwidth, but we suggest at least 10mbps. Note that this is per headset in simultaneous use, so if a department has 4 headsets they will need 80mbps total bandwidth available for all 4 headsets to stream highest quality video at the same time.
What types of internet connection are suitable for PatientVR?
Most deployments choose to use a 4/5G cellular Wi-Fi base station. In good cellular coverage areas these can support from 4 up to 10 or more headsets. Existing facility or guest Wi-Fi can be used, but care needs to be taken to ensure the high bandwidth use of high quality 360° VR video streaming does not impact other users of the Wi-Fi network.
Does PatientVR provide the headsets?
No. PatientVR app runs on Commercial Off The Shelf Quest VR headsets from Meta. These headsets are typically purchased by the subscriber (usually a department in a hospital or other healthcare facility).
Has PatientVR passed any security audits or certifications?
No. There are two reasons for this. 1) We very carefully avoid collecting any data that qualifies as Personally Identifying Information or Health Information, so we have no need to demonstrate security of that type of data. 2) A typical deployment uses a dedicated 5G Wi-Fi hotspot and does not connect to any internal IT systems. In cases where a customer chooses to use existing Wi-Fi and networks, we can assist with recommended firewall rules and access control to limit network traffic to known/expected sources and destinations.
